About Lirquén Wetlands Reserve

Lirquén Wetlands Reserve is located along the Pacific coast in the Biobío Region of Chile, adjacent to the industrial city of Lirquén. This protected wetland area spans estuaries, salt marshes, shallow lagoons, and tidal flats, forming one of the last remaining wetlands on this stretch of Chile's coast. Its geographic position at the mouth of the Bío Bío River creates a nutrient-rich habitat that supports diverse aquatic and terrestrial species. Over 120 bird species, including migratory birds such as terns, herons, and sandpipers, use this reserve as crucial breeding and feeding grounds. The site also shelters native plant species adapted to saline and freshwater conditions, some of which are endemic and rare. Historically, the wetlands have faced pressures from urban expansion and industrial pollution, but local conservation efforts have led to its designation as a protected reserve. Outdoor enthusiasts and birdwatchers visit Lirquén Wetlands for tranquil wildlife viewing, photography, and environmental education. Visitors can explore a modest network of wooden boardwalks and observation points designed to minimize ecological disturbance while offering spectacular views over the marshes and estuaries. The reserve’s close proximity to the city of Lirquén and the greater Concepción metropolitan area makes it an accessible natural retreat for residents and tourists seeking to experience Chile’s coastal wetland ecosystem. The Lirquén Wetlands Reserve serves an important role not only in regional biodiversity conservation but also as an outdoor classroom highlighting the balance between industrial development and environmental protection.
